Food plant explosion leaves one dead and several injured, Georgia authorities say
One person is dead and several others are injured after an explosion at a Tyson Foods plant in Georgia, authorities said.
The incident happened overnight Dec. 26 at a facility in Camilla, about a 60-mile drive north from Tallahassee, Florida, a spokesperson for Tyson told McClatchy News.
Mitchell County Coroner Jamey Thompson told WTXL the body of a 61-year-old woman from Las Vegas, Nevada, was recovered around 2 p.m. Dec. 27. The woman didn’t work at the plant but was with her husband who was driving a truck, the outlet reported.
“We are working closely with local authorities to determine the cause of a late-night fire at our Camilla, Georgia facility that resulted in the death of one person and several injuries,” a Tyson Foods spokesperson told McClatchy News. “We are conducting a full investigation into the cause of the fire.”
According to the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which represents 1,600 workers at the facility, a boiler exploded at the plant.
“We are working with the company, and local emergency authorities to ensure that all the workers impacted are taken care of,” the union said in a Dec. 27 statement.
