A 23-year-old son shot his parents, killing his father, after he said his dad accused him of spending too much time playing video games, according to Florida authorities.

Joseph Voigt fled to Orlando, where he was arrested during a traffic stop, and now faces charges of murder and attempted murder, Orange County records show.

Voigt and his father, 63-year-old Marvin Voigt, got into an argument the evening of Dec. 7, deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a Dec. 9 news release.

“He said his father was upset with him about spending the majority of his time playing video games” and would get on him about “making something of himself and getting a job,” deputies said.

The son then shot and killed his father in the driveway of a Bartow home and shot his mom as well, according to investigators.

The 58-year-old mom reported the shooting and said her son fled the home, deputies said.

A few hours later, law enforcement spotted his vehicle in Orlando, about a 60-mile drive northeast from Bartow, and they took him into custody, deputies said.

The mom had a “serious gunshot wound” and is in critical but stable condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

About a week before the shooting, Joseph Voigt was arrested and charged with two counts of battery, then was granted bond Dec. 5 on a condition he couldn’t possess any firearm, Polk County records show.

He’ll be extradited to Polk County.
