A key piece of Hollywood history — the Beaton House — lists in California. See it

When it was built below a legendary sign that overlooks West Los Angeles, the developers of a residence known as the Beaton House probably didn’t envision that the home would eventually become deeply embedded in the very history of Tinseltown — and still be around 100 years later.

And now, the iconic five-bedroom, three-bathroom estate that is surrounded by the highs and lows of a California backdrop has landed on the market for $2.99 million.

“Don’t miss this rare opportunity to own a piece of Hollywood history!” the listing on Compass says. “Located behind the gates in Hollywoodland, this Spanish-style home, built in 1924, was among the first homes constructed in the historic Hollywoodland development, lying just beneath the iconic Hollywood sign.”

Back when the house was built, the famous letters that dot the rolling hillside actually spelled out “Hollywoodland.” It was changed to simply “Hollywood” in 1949 after it was seen as an eyesore thanks to its crumbling disrepair, CNET reported.

However, Hollywoodland was also a real estate project that would attempt to lure celebrities and professionals to an enclave that was being built in the hills.

“As the first completed residence in the community, the Beaton House played a pivotal role in demonstrating the area’s potential for high-end living. It was not merely a home; it was a symbol of Hollywoodland’s ambition to offer privacy, exclusivity, and sophistication to those shaping the future of Hollywood and the world at large,” the L.A. Explained Blog said.

“The house’s completion marked the beginning of a new era, not just for Los Angeles, but for residential developments everywhere, redefining what it meant to live luxuriously in a city on the cusp of international fame.”

The interior is just as sophisticated as its exterior and has an abundance of intriguing features, per the listing, including:

  • Expansive open floor plan

  • Natural light

  • High ceilings

  • Original windows

  • Hardwood floors

  • Fireplace

  • Chef’s kitchen

  • Terrace

  • Backyard

“Conveniently located just moments from popular hiking trails, the Beachwood Cafe, and world-class dining, shopping, and entertainment, this home epitomizes California living at its finest,” the listing says.

The listing is held by Bryn Schneider.
