Man wielding machete slashes two deputies serving eviction notice, Georgia cops say
An early morning eviction turned potentially deadly when an enraged tenant started hacking two sheriff’s deputies with a machete, according to Georgia investigators.
It happened before 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at a home outside Jenkinsburg, and the deputies ended up hospitalized, the Butts County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Jenkinsburg is about a 40-mile drive southeast from Atlanta.
“As deputies were executing the order, the suspect whom was being evicted, grabbed a machete and began striking,” the sheriff’s office said.
“One deputy received a laceration to the arm and has been treated and released from the hospital. The second deputy has a large laceration to his head and hand and is currently in stable condition.”
Both are expected to recover.
Details of how the deputies responded to the attack were not released.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is credited with arresting 30-year-old Courtney Deonta Reeves, who is charged with aggravated assault against law enforcement, according to a GBI news release.
“I want to make this very, very clear. If you assault one of my deputies and are fortunate enough to live another day, rest assured, when convicted I will do everything in my legal power to see that you spend every possible day in a State Prison,” Butts County Sheriff Gary Long said in the release.
“In this profession, we go to work every day knowing that there is a possibility that we won’t make it home, but we are willing to risk it all to save life and property of those we serve. These deputies are true heroes and true public servants.”
