An Amazon delivery driver is charged in a hit-and-run crash that left a 79-year-old woman dead, Georgia sheriff’s deputies said.
London Best, 24, of Alpharetta, was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 12, on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in a death, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
Best was delivering packages when he struck Sandra Fitts on Cumming Highway in Canton and kept going, deputies said in a news release. Authorities were called to the crash at about 6:30 Tuesday evening.
On their way to the crash, a deputy reported seeing an Amazon delivery truck turn down a nearby street. Evidence at the scene suggested Fitts had been hit by an Amazon truck, so deputies asked for help searching for it.
A Canton police officer found the vehicle nearby “with damage consistent with the evidence” found at the scene of the crash, deputies said in the release.
Authorities found Best and placed him under arrest.
“We’re deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Amazon spokesperson Austin Stowe told McClatchy News in a statement.
“We’ll support local police as they investigate,” Stowe said.
Amazon said Best won’t be allowed to make deliveries on the company’s behalf, pending the outcome of the investigation.
He remained in custody at the Cherokee County Jail without bond as of Nov. 13, online records show.
Canton is about a 40-mile drive north from downtown Atlanta.
