‘They were skin and bones.’ Two dogs rescued just in time by Pennsylvania shelter
Two dogs who were suffering in a neglectful situation were saved just in the nick of time by a shelter in Philadelphia.
German shepherds, named Mandy and Kaynin, were suffering from lack of food and were both in abysmal living conditions, the Pennsylvania SPCA said.
“When Mandy and Kaynin arrived at our shelter last week, they were skin and bones,” the shelter said in a Oct. 11 Facebook post.
“Our Animal Law Enforcement team had received a tip that two German Shepherds were not being adequately cared for, and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found Mandy and Kaynin.
“Every bone in their bodies protruded underneath their dirty coats and their eyes were full of sorrow. After reportedly spending all of their days in those crates, the two were skittish and terrified of people. But with some coaxing, they allowed our officers to leash them and were finally on their way to safety.”
When the duo was assessed at the Philadelphia headquarters, their conditions were more “shocking” than originally expected.
“Mandy scored a 2/9 on the Purina Body Condition Scale and Kaynin scored a 1/9, weighing only 38lbs. An adult male German Shepherd should weigh closer to 70lbs,” the shelter said.
“With the help of our veterinary team, both dogs are on their way to recovery. Luckily, putting on weight will be their longest journey, as their hearts healed as soon as they realized they were safe with us.”
According to the shelter, both dogs will be available for adoption in the near future.
“Mandy is available now, though she may have to gain some weight before she has her spay surgery,” the Pennsylvania SPCA director of public relations, Gillian Kocher, told McClatchy News. “She can be adopted now, but may need to wait to go home.
“Kaynin will take a bit longer as he was the thinner of the two. I’d expect him to be available for adoption in a few weeks.”
