Bystanders try to save hiker who fell 30 feet to his death in Arches National Park
Bystanders tried to save a hiker who fell about 30 feet near an overlook in Utah’s Arches National Park, rangers said.
They gave the 68-year-old man CPR after he fell near Black Arch Overlook the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 8 on the Devils Garden Trail, rangers said in a news release.
He died by the time first responders arrived, officials said. Personnel from Grand County Sheriff’s Department, Grand County EMS, Classic Air Medical, and the Department of Public Safety also responded.
First responders declared him dead when they arrived. He had been visiting the park from Paramus, New Jersey, per the release.
Grand County Sheriff’s Office and the National Park Service are investigating the incident. The man’s identity has not been publicly released.
Devils Garden is one of the most popular sections of the park and offers trails to several arches, spires, and narrow rock walls called “fins,” according to the park’s website. It offers “breathtaking views” and hiking for all skill levels.
Arches National Park is about a 230-mile drive southeast from Salt Lake City.
