10-year-old girl killed in hit-and-run while riding scooter with her mom, TN cops say
A driver veered into a bike lane and fatally struck a 10-year-old girl riding an electric scooter with her mom before fleeing the scene, Tennessee authorities said.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department put out a call for help locating the driver of a red Nissan Sentra, police said in a news release. On Monday, Oct. 7, investigators announced that a tip led them to the discovery of what they believe is the car involved in the crash.
The evening of Oct. 5, 10-year-old Emily Sanchez-Ramirez and her 28-year-old mother were riding a scooter northbound on Nolensville Pike in the southbound bike lane, according to police.
The driver of a red Nissan sedan is accused of hitting the mother and daughter, police said.
“That car hit them head-on,” Lynze Pickett told WSMV. “The next thing we saw was the mom, she was in the air.”
The two family members were taken to a hospital, where the girl died from her injuries, according to police. The mom, who initially was deemed to have non-life-threatening injuries, was upgraded to critical status and remained hospitalized as of Oct. 7, police said.
The Nissan had damage to the front, including a broken headlight, as well as a temporary tag, according to police. Although police said they discovered the car involved in the incident, officers are still looking for a suspect for questioning.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
