A motorcyclist died in what troopers call a “freak accident” after being hit by a flying tire on a highway, the Colorado State Patrol and news outlets reported.

The fatal crash took place on Interstate 25 near Colorado Springs at 8:36 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, troopers told McClatchy News in an email.

A tire flew off a Subaru and “bounded and rolled” into oncoming traffic, troopers said.

The tire struck the top of the motorcyclist’s helmet and his Harley Davidson crashed into a guardrail, troopers said.

Troopers and emergency crews tried to revive the motorcyclist but he was pronounced dead at a hospital, troopers said.

Troopers did not release the identity of the motorcyclist..

Colorado Springs is about a 70-mile drive south from Denver.
