A father has been arrested after police found his four children living in “atrocious and inhumane” conditions, without food or clothing, Ohio police said.

The 42-year-old man was arrested Aug. 31 on a child endangerment charge, court records show. Attorney contact information was not included in online court records.

McClatchy News is not naming the parents to protect the children’s identities.

According to a criminal complaint, officers with the Toledo Police Department discovered four children in the residence without “clothes, food, furniture, or lighting in the household.“

Authorities said the bathtub was “filled with old dirty water,” and flies surrounded the children, “covered from head to toe in dirt, mud, feces, etc.” as they slept.

One child had two marks resembling cigarette burns on their wrists, police said.

The children told authorities about being molested, according to the complaint.

While two of the four children were of school age, they had “not ever been enrolled in a proper schooling system,” authorities said.

The man’s bond was set at $10,000, and he was ordered to have no contact with the children, court records show.

The children’s mother is also facing a child endangerment charge, WTVG reported.
