A lottery player’s scratch-off didn’t yield a win, but she still has the Virginia ticket to thank for helping her score a multi-million dollar jackpot.

The ticket included a promotion for online lottery games, and that promotion led Remona Thompson to a $5.3 million prize, the Virginia Lottery said in an Aug. 14 news release.

“I was just kind of stunned!” she told lottery officials.

Thompson decided to try the Outlaw’s Loot game when she got home after she learned her scratch-off ticket was a non-winner, officials said.

The afternoon of July 3, the Woodbridge woman hit a $5,306,505 jackpot, according to the Virginia Lottery.

The game debuted online June 11, according to the Outlaw’s Loot page.

Players seeking to play online Virginia Lottery games must be at least 18 and “physically located in Virginia,” lottery officials said.

Woodbridge, which is in Prince William County, is about a 25-mile drive southwest from Washington, D.C.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
