Grandpa played lottery for ‘years and years’ in Maryland. Then he landed big win
A grandpa went to double-check his winning Powerball ticket after learning he’d won a big prize, Maryland Lottery officials said.
The Bel Air retiree, who has played Mega Millions, Powerball and Multi-Match lottery games for “years and years and years,” couldn’t believe his $50,000 prize, according to a July 22 news release by the Maryland Lottery.
Before the $50,000 win, the lucky man had never won more than $400, officials said.
It was during his morning routine that he learned he’d been visited by lottery luck, officials said.
While checking his ticket for the July 17 drawing, he realized “he had matched four regular balls plus the Powerball,” officials said.
He felt “unsure,” so he decided to take the ticket to get scanned for confirmation, officials said.
After scanning the $8 four-line ticket, he was prompted with a message telling him to take it to lottery headquarters, officials said.
The man said his “grandchildren will benefit” from the prize and he also may use the money toward a vacation and home renovations, officials said.
Bel Air is about a 30-mile drive northeast of Baltimore.
