Stolen car with only 3 tires was being driven by armed 13-year-old, Georgia cops say
The discovery of a speeding car with only three wheels got even stranger when police realized the driver was just 13, according to investigators in eastern Georgia.
And he was armed with a gun also reported stolen, the Glynn County Police Department says.
The traffic stop happened around 5 a.m. Monday, July 15, in Brunswick, about a 70-mile drive northeast from Jacksonville, Florida.
“Officer William Duggan spotted a Toyota Camry traveling on Georgia Highway 27 at Cary Street with no front tire on the front passenger side ... and no license plate attached,” the department wrote in a Facebook post.
“Duggan signaled for the vehicle to stop but it did not and a winding pursuit ensued during which the Camry drove in the wrong lane of travel, reaching speeds of 65 mph and nearly hitting another vehicle on two separate occasions.”
The deputy resorted to using a PIT maneuver, which involves ramming the back corner of a fleeing vehicle to send it veering off the road.
It didn’t work, but Duggan tried a second time and brought the Camry to a stop, deputies said.
That’s when he discovered the driver was 13 and had a handgun, officials said.
The boy was arrested and “turned over to the custody of Juvenile Justice and transported to Regional Youth Detention Center (RYDC) in Savannah,” officials said.
Investigators did not release details about where the boy was going at 5 a.m. or how he got the car.
His charges include:
- Fleeing and eluding (felony)
- Theft by receiving (felony)
- Reckless driving
- Driving without a license
- Driving with no insurance
