While the eight-bedroom, 10-bathroom house has been remodeled to reflect the epitome of modern day living in the Big Easy, especially when it comes to its playfully exuberant color scheme, the LaLaurie Mansion has a darker story written in permanent pen within its bones.

In 1832, the home was owned by socialite Madame Delphine MacCarthy LaLaurie, who was known for throwing elaborate gatherings with her husband. She later became known for her unfathomable treatment of Black enslaved people, the New Orleans Historical Organization said.

Two years later, a fire exposed LaLaurie cruelties when firefighters made the gruesome discovery of neglect, after which the New Orleans Bee newspaper condemned LaLaurie and called her acts “barbarous and fiendish,” the organization reported.

It was said that the mob ran LaLaurie out of New Orleans shortly after the fire and the rest of the home was destroyed, according to Black Past.

The rebuilt 10,284-square-foot home is now considered a historic landmark and is a hot spot for tourists, which has been widely criticized, the organization says.

Presently, the home is also recognized for its dramatic upgrades and additions, including the roof top deck, which is a rarity in the city, the listing on Latter & Blum and Compass notes.
