Stolen mail found scattered outside a hotel led to the arrest of an accused identity thief, California sheriff’s officials reported.

A deputy spotted the discarded mail in Cupertino and pulled over a vehicle leaving the area, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said in a June 28 news release.

The deputy found stolen letters, packages, credit cards and checks inside the vehicle, along with a methamphetamine pipe, the agency said.

The driver, who has three previous identity theft convictions and two more pending cases, was arrested, deputies said. Officials did not release the driver’s name or charges.

More than 250 pieces of stolen mail from Cupertino and Mountain View were recovered.

Cupertino is about a 45-mile drive southeast from San Francisco.
