‘Treasure hunter’ needs help following injury looking for $25,000, Utah rescuers say
A “treasure hunter” ended up injured on a Utah mountain during a hike to find $25,000, rescuers said.
Two people set out June 16 on the Killyon’s trail in Emigration Canyon toward Lookout Peak, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue said in a June 19 Facebook post.
They were taking part in the Utah Treasure Hunt, an annual event that started in 2020 and involves finding a chest with money hidden “somewhere in Utah.”
This year, the chest has $25,000. People have to decipher a poem in Spanish to get hints.
Additionally, the group said it hid the money with “safety in mind.”
“You follow a trail almost the entire way there. Once you step off the trail, it’s not dangerous whatsoever. No rock climbing, mountain goating, crazy bushwacking, or digging is necessary at all,” according to the Utah Treasure Hunt website.
However, one of the hikers in search of the money ended up with an injured leg and a medical problem, rescuers said.
They called 911 for help with a dying phone and tried to give directions on where they were.
Rescuers said they searched every trail leading up to the mountain peak and eventually found the hikers.
One was airlifted from the mountain, and the other hiker walked down with rescuers.
Lookout Peak is northwest of Salt Lake City.
