A “fun-loving” dog with an “adorable smile” has spent more than 400 days in a North Carolina shelter — and still needs a home.

Sully Smiles, named for her silly grin, has become the longest resident at the Watauga Humane Society in Boone, the shelter said June 10 in a Facebook post.

“Her smile lights up a room, and she has been practicing to light up your home,” the animal organization wrote in an online adoption profile. “She is described as happy-go-lucky and fun-loving. Sporty girl to her core, Sully is always on the go and looking for her next adventure.”

Sully Smiles landed at the shelter in April 2023, after she was found roaming the mountains of North Carolina as a stray. The person who rescued her wasn’t “in a position to add another dog to their pack” and brought her to the shelter.

At the time, Sully Smiles was known to be friendly around other dogs. “Couple that with her adorable smile and sweet disposition, we were certain she would quickly find that perfect home,” the shelter wrote.

But after spending more than a year in the shelter environment, Sully Smiles’ preferences have changed.

“Although her demeanor with her caregivers has always been loving, bright, sunny and happy, little by little, we saw a shift,” the shelter wrote. “Truth be told, after such a long stay with us, she became dog selective and is now looking for a home as an only pet.”

The shelter believes this is the reason the 3-year-old mixed-breed dog is being overlooked. It said Sully Smiles “faces an uphill battle” and hopes she will be adopted into a home where she can stay active.

“She is super sweet, loves to play, is cuddly and is a champion napper,” a shelter spokesperson told McClatchy News in an email.

As of June 10, online posts show Sully Smiles still in need of a new owner. More details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at wataugahumane.org.

Boone is a roughly 85-mile drive west from Winston-Salem.
