Mom ‘flabbergasted’ as gifted lottery ticket from daughter wins big. ‘She deserves it’
A $5 gift from a daughter to her mother turned out to be worth much more.
The mother scratched off a gifted Maryland lottery ticket from her daughter but didn’t realize it was a winner until her daughter pointed it out.
“I said to her, ‘Are you sure it is real?’” the woman recounted, thinking her daughter was playing a joke.
They took the ticket to a retailer and confirmed this was no joke. It was a $50,000 winner, according to lottery officials.
“I was flabbergasted,” the Essex mother said when she realized the prize was real. The winner said she did not know how she was going to spend her prize.
Her daughter said she isn’t a frequent lottery player and dislikes gifting scratch-off tickets for one reason — it’s possible they could be a winner.
However, she told officials she’s happy for her mother.
“She deserves it because she is my mom and she has done a lot for me,” the daughter said.
Essex is about a 12-mile drive northeast of Baltimore.
