A missing 61-year-old on a solo hike was found dead at the bottom of an Oregon cliff, officials say.

A friend reported the woman missing after she did not return from a solo hike at Oneonta Falls on Friday, March 15, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The friend found the woman’s car parked near the Horsetail Falls Trailhead, deputies said.

After the friend reported the woman missing, deputies said they searched the trails west of Columbia River Gorge “throughout the night.”

Gresham police also searched the area with drones, according to deputies.

As the woman did not have her cellphone, deputies said they could not track her location using cell tower pings.

Deputies said they, along with other agencies, returned to search the following day using tracking dogs and drones.

The missing woman, whose identity was not released, was found dead “at the bottom of a cliff near Horsetail Falls Trailhead,” deputies said.

Rescuers recovered the woman’s body, deputies said, adding that the medical examiner’s office will determine her cause of death.

Horsetail Falls Trail, about a 35-mile drive east of Portland, is “a short but steep hike,” according to the United States Forest Service.

“Be aware there are steep cliffs in places, so use caution,” the agency says.
