A stranger wearing a ski mask grabbed a child from behind and covered her mouth as she played in her backyard, the girl told police in Massachusetts.

She broke free from the masked man’s grasp on March 14 in Lexington, according to the Lexington Police Department.

The 9-year-old kicked him in the groin, and then ran inside to call her mother who was working and away from home, the mother told NBC Boston.

When she did, the man, described as wearing all black, ran off, police said in a March 14 news release.

Officers responded to the possible abduction attempt at around 2 p.m., according to the police.

“This incident is being thoroughly investigated,” police said

The girl’s mother told WCVB-TV that her daughter was playing with siblings before the man emerged from the woods. While at work, she said a call came in from her daughter.

“She told me, she was like: ‘Mommy, somebody grabbed me from behind,’ and as soon as she told me: ‘Someone tried to kidnap me,’ I called 911 immediately,” the mother said.

While speaking with NBC Boston, the mother explained that before the man appeared, her daughter heard a noise coming from the backyard and went to check it out on her own.

When she did, the man grabbed her, she told the outlet.

“For me to know there’s a man behind my house hiding, that’s just like, it makes me feel very unsafe,” the mother said.

The Lexington Police Department is sharing details of the potential kidnapping attempt with regional detective groups.

“If anyone was in the area at the time and saw something out of the ordinary, please contact the Lexington Police Department,” police said.
