Driver of school bus carrying 17 kids passes out and plows through fence, WY cops say
A school bus plowed through a fence after the driver passed out while taking 17 elementary students to school, Wyoming cops say.
The 49-year-old driver could only remember picking up the last kid on his line and looking down to check he was within the 45-mph speed limit before going unconscious, multiple outlets reported.
It happened early Wednesday, Nov. 1 in the northeast town of Gillette, about 100 miles northeast of Casper, County17 reported.
The driver experienced some kind of medical episode while passing through an intersection, and the bus veered off the road, hit a berm and went into a drainage ditch, Campbell County Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds told the Gillette News Record.
The bus tore down 30 yards of barbed-wire fence before stopping with all of its wheels off the ground on a hillside, Reynolds told Cowboy State Daily.
Miraculously, none of the students were injured in the crash — deputies said they weren’t even upset or distraught, the outlet reported. The driver was more concerned about the students than himself, according to the outlet, but paramedics cleared the students and took the driver to the hospital.
Another school bus picked the students up and took them to school, and their parents were notified of the crash, the Gillette News Record reported.
