17-year-old dresses up as married woman to try to rob bank, Florida cops say
An accused bank robber dressed in women’s clothes and wearing a wedding band was actually a teen boy in disguise, Florida deputies said.
On Sept. 6, a person wearing black pants, a pink shirt, a jean jacket, a face mask and a bright pink bonnet walked into a Wells Fargo in Tampa, according to a Sept. 6 Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office news release.
The person was also wearing a wedding band and carrying a purse, according to photos shared by the sheriff’s office.
The person walked up to one of the bank tellers and handed them a note, deputies said.
The note said the person had a gun and demanded money, according to the sheriff’s office.
Before the teller handed over any more money or police could arrive, the person ran away from the bank in an unknown direction, deputies said.
“Attempting to rob a bank is not just a crime, it’s a breach of the trust that holds our community together,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the release.
Almost two weeks later, deputies identified a 17-year-old boy as the accused robber, according to a Sept. 18 updated news release.
The boy was found near a public storage area near the Wells Fargo, deputies said.
Deputies did not release what led investigators to the teen.
“This incident serves as a poignant reminder that youth can be swayed down perilous paths, and it’s our duty to steer them towards a brighter future,” Chronister said in the release.
The boy was charged with felony robbery while wearing a mask, and he was taken into custody and brought to the Juvenile Assessment Center, deputies said.
