Sister and teen brother found shot dead on shoulder of Georgia highway, cops say
A medical call led officers to two siblings dead on the side of a highway, police in Georgia say. Now a homicide investigation is underway.
Officers responded at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, to Interstate 85 at the 985 split, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.
A passerby saw a man and a woman in the grass and called 911, police said in an Aug. 31 news release. Authorities identified them as Maria Rosaria Montes Dorantes, 23, and her brother, Juan Angel Montes, 16, of Griffin.
The driver was having car trouble and pulled over when they spotted the victims “bleeding, not conscious and not breathing,” WANF reported, citing an incident report. There were no other vehicles nearby when they were found.
The county medical examiner determined the siblings were shot to death.
Additional information wasn’t released.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Gwinnett County police detectives at 770-513-5300, or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477).
Gwinnett County is about 30 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
