At least one student is dead and more than 20 are injured after a packed school bus flipped during a crash with a minivan, Ohio authorities say.

The bus, carrying Northwestern Local School District students, was driving along State Highway 41 in Clark County, at about 8:16 a.m. Aug. 22, when the crash occurred, Ohio State Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Police said there were 53 people on board the bus, including the driver, WBNS reported.

In a Facebook post, the school district said the crash happened along “one of our elementary routes.”

The bus was heading west when an eastbound Honda Odyssey veered toward the bus, officials said.

The bus driver tried to avoid a head-on impact with the van, but the vehicles still collided, police told WBNS.

“The school bus subsequently went off the right side of the roadway and overturned as a result of the crash,” highway patrol said in the release.

First responders took 22 injured children to hospitals for treatment, including one with “serious, life-threatening injuries,” officials said.

The 35-year-old minivan driver and his passenger, 37, were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release.

It was the first day of school for the school district, the Dayton Daily News reported.

The crash is under investigation, police said.
