Mom, two young sons among 4 killed in NC crash, cops say. Alcohol likely a factor
UPDATE: The driver accused of hitting the Cadillac head-on was identified as Regina Aquiningoc, the mother of 4-year-old Nasir Spivey-Carter and his 1-year-old brother Mathias Spivey-Carter. All three died in the crash, Sgt. K.J. Guthrie told McClatchy News in a phone interview.
The fourth person who died was identified as the Cadillac driver, Mary Perry of Goldsboro.
Troopers confirmed to McClatchy News that alcohol and speed are believed to be factors that contributed to the crash.
The original story is below.
Four people — including two young kids — died when a driver veered into oncoming traffic on a North Carolina highway, state troopers said.
The head-on crash was reported along U.S. Highway 13 in Wayne County. A Toyota was traveling west when it went over the center line, causing it to crash head-on into an eastbound Cadillac, according to Sgt. K.J. Guthrie.
All three people in the Toyota were killed in the Aug. 6 crash. Those who died were identified as a 32-year-old driver, and 4- and 1-year-old passengers, Guthrie told McClatchy News in a phone interview.
The 60-year-old Cadillac driver also died from crash-related injuries, officials said.
The N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to the crash just before 5:30 p.m. It happened near Goldsboro, roughly 55 miles southeast of Raleigh.
Johnny Grady told ABC11 he lives in the area and saw the aftermath.
“Those cars were really messed up,” Grady told the TV station, the News & Observer’s media partner. “They had pieces coming off of them when they loaded them up on the road to take them away.”
Troopers believe alcohol and speed played roles in the deadly crash, WITN reported.
Highway Patrol didn’t share additional details with McClatchy News on Aug. 7.
