A cyclist died after a tree fell on her during a thunderstorm with strong winds, Utah police said.

A bystander called 911 after seeing a “large tree” fall on the 68-year-old cyclist riding on a Clearfield trail in the evening of July 19, the Clearfield Police Department said in a news release posted to Facebook.

After arriving on scene, officers found the unconscious woman pinned under the tree, police said.

“Officers were able to lift the tree enough” to pull the woman from under the tree and perform life-saving measures until fire officials arrived, according to police.

Police said they cleared a path, and the woman was taken to a hospital in “extremely critical condition,” where she died shortly after arriving. The woman’s name has not been released.

While police said they are still investigating the incident, they believe the “tragic accident” was “likely caused by high winds blowing a tree down.”

Clearfield is about 30 miles northwest of Salt Lake City.
