A 15-month-old boy was hit and killed after he wandered away from home, Ohio police said.

The toddler slipped past his 17-year-old babysitter and walked into a road near his home in Milton Township on July 14, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol news release.

A Ford F-150 traveling down the road then struck the boy, police said.

The driver, a 43-year-old man from Smithville, and a passenger were not injured.

Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene, and a medical helicopter was “immediately summoned,” police said.

The boy was flown to a hospital in Akron, where he died the next day.

He was identified as Wyatt Stoller, according to the Akron Beacon Journal, citing police.

“Yesterday, we caressed and kissed those tiny toes and fingers that were so painfully still,” a family member wrote on Facebook on July 16, adding, “now our little sweetheart got to go to Jesus before us.”

The crash remains under investigation, police said.

Milton Township is located about 30 miles east of Akron.
