Woman swept into gorge and dies after falling from cliff in Glacier National Park
UPDATE: On Friday, May 26, officials identified the woman who drowned as University of Kansas student Atheer Abdulraham S. Alquahtani from Saudi Arabia. She had been living in Lawrence, Kansas. Friends traveling with her told officials she recently finished her first year of her master’s degree at the university and was touring national parks on a road trip to celebrate. They described her as a risk taker who loved getting in and being near water.

A woman died after she fell from a rocky cliff and was swept into a gorge in Glacier National Park in Montana, authorities said.
The 28-year-old from Kansas, who officials did not name, fell from a “rocky overhang” and into Avalanche Creek, where she was swept into the gorge on the afternoon of Monday, May 22, National Park Service officials said in a news release.
Bystanders who spotted her in the creek “passing under” the bridge at Trail of the Cedars “waded into the water to pull her out,” officials said in the release.
The bystanders started giving her CPR and instructed others to notify rangers and call 911, officials said.
Park rangers and emergency medical services declared the woman dead at the side of the creek, officials said. Rangers carried her body to Avalanche Lake Trailhead and transferred the body to funeral services.
Park staff thanked first responders and the bystanders for their help and extended condolences to the family and friends of the woman, adding that the public should respect their privacy.
