Hiker hears cries for help and finds woman trapped between boulders on Arizona cliff
A woman trapped between two boulders on a 50-foot cliff was rescued after a hiker heard her yells for help, according to an Arizona fire department.
The 20-year-old woman told fire officials she was “free climbing by herself when her leg got twisted between two large boulders” at Pinnacle Peak Park, the Scottsdale Fire Department said in an April 27 Facebook post.
The woman yelled for help as she tried to get herself out for more than an hour-and-a-half, fire officials said.
“Finally another hiker heard her cries for help and called 911,” the fire department said.
Rescue crews from the Scottsdale and Phoenix fire departments found the woman with “her leg wedged between two large boulders,” fire officials said.
The fire department said responders then freed the woman from the boulders.
Before being taken to a hospital for “non-life threatening injuries,” first responders treated the woman for dehydration, according to the fire department.
Hiking safety tips
Once hikers have a plan, they should let others know their whereabouts, the fire department said.
Hikers should also bring a charged cellphone and ensure they are hydrated prior to their trek, the fire department said.
Lastly, if free climbing, the fire department recommends hikers should do so “with a buddy.”
Pinnacle Peak Park is about 30 miles northeast of Phoenix.
