Two killed when ambulance loses control and slams into SUV, Georgia police say
An ambulance lost control and slammed into an SUV, leaving two people dead in Georgia, officials told news outlets.
Two other people — the ambulance driver and a patient — were taken to a hospital after the crash on Monday, March 20, according to preliminary information from the Atlanta Police Department.
Irvinna Jenkins told WSB-TV she was going to work when she came across the “horrific scene.” She said she checked on people in the ambulance and discovered the SUV driver didn’t have a pulse.
“One of the worst situations I have ever been in,” Jenkins told the station. “To see two people lose their lives ... (and I’m) learning first aid and CPR and there was nothing I could do.”
Charges are expected in the deadly crash, which was reported at about 1 p.m. along Campbellton Road, southwest of downtown Atlanta.
Police said a “medical transport van” was traveling on the road “when it struck the righthand curb, lost control and crossed into the oncoming lanes of travel, striking the SUV.” Photos from WAGA showed the crash flipped the SUV and left the ambulance with a missing door and front-end damage.
“I come out to the front and looked on the porch and saw two vehicles,” Ronald Simon, who lives in the area, told WXIA. “One — smoking with people actually getting out.”
The SUV driver and a person in the ambulance died from crash-related injuries, officers wrote in a news release.
One of the people killed in the crash was Tiquita Miles, an EMS worker from Covington whose name was also spelled “Ti’Quita” in a news report. The second was Jada Whatley, a 29-year-old from the Atlanta area, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office told WXIA and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The two people hurt in the crash had injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening.
Police in their news release didn’t say what caused the ambulance to run into the curb, though an investigation was ongoing as of March 20.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for additional information on March 22.
