To the dismay of her family, Sadie the cat went missing from her Virginia home in 2016, an animal shelter says.

“Her family was devastated,” the Stafford County Animal Shelter said in a March 2 Facebook post.

Little to their knowledge, for years Sadie, now 8 years old, was “running amongst the wild,” the shelter said.

About two years ago she found a new home in someone’s garage, according to the shelter. They started taking care of her and thought she was thought she was a “random stray they were just feeding,” the shelter said.

“Turns out, Sadie was microchipped,” according to the shelter.

The shelter said it contacted Sadie’s family, who was “beyond excited.”

“After seven years, Sadie has made her way back home to her family,” the shelter said.

The shelter also urged the importance of microchipping pets, saying “it has helped us reunite so many lost animals.”

A microchip is a tiny implant the size of a grain of rice that stores “a unique identification number,” according to VCA Animal Hospitals. They’re a form of permanent identification and can help connect lost pets to their owners.

Stafford is about 10 miles northeast of Fredericksburg.
