Stranded snowmobilers build snow cave to stay warm overnight, Utah rescuers say
Two snowmobilers were rescued after they got stranded overnight in Utah’s frigid conditions, news outlets reported.
The two men, described to be in their 30s, left at around 8 a.m. Feb. 21 to go snowmobiling in Evanston, Wyoming, according to KUTV.
The two men, low on fuel, got trapped in a bowl, according to ABC 4.
They built a fire, a snow cave and sent out an SOS alert to search and rescue teams while they waited out the night’s storm, according to ABC 4.
Rescuers were dispatched at about 3:30 a.m. Feb. 22 to the Mirror Lake Highway area but weren’t able to get to the men until 9:30 a.m., according to KUTV.
The men used a SPOT location device, and search and rescue teams found them in good condition, according to a news release on Facebook by the Summit County Sheriff.
“The forest is a big place and especially with a major storm like we just had that snow is going to eliminate tracks things of that nature. So them being prepared really helped us help them,” officials told KUTV.
The sheriff’s office urges the public to stay prepared, have a plan, take food and water and wear appropriate clothes for the weather.
Evanston, Wyoming, is about 80 miles northeast of Salt Lake City.
