It’s wildly famous — and invisible. Now this California estate is for sale

A unique, and aesthetically bizarre, estate in the popular tourist destination of Joshua Tree, California, has landed on the real estate market after cruising for years as an expensive rental for A-list celebrities.

The Invisible House — yes, you read that right — is now listed for $18 million after being a pricey $150,000 a month rental.

And there’s a reason why the beautiful residence is considered “invisible.”

“There are only a few spaces in the world that capture architectural brilliance, interior design magnificence, and environmental harmony all at once,” the listing on Realtor.com says.

“Now is your chance to own something truly remarkable, seemingly unattainable. Welcome to the Invisible House, 67.5 acres of pure tranquility in Joshua Tree, California. Designed by film producer, Chris Hanley, and Frank Gehry collaborator, Tomas Osinski, the Invisible House is built to directly connect inhabitant with environment through a mirrored glass exterior that seamlessly bridges the gap between indoor and outdoor space, masking itself as an indistinguishable component of the dramatic, rocky, desert landscape Joshua Tree is renowned for.”

Hanley — who has produced such films as “American Psycho” and “The Virgin Suicides” — spent weekends at the home with his wife to get away from the fast pace Los Angeles life in the 1990s, when he purchased the land. The home was built in 2013, he told The Wall Street Journal, and the couple moved into it during the COVID-19 pandemic. After that, they started renting it out to celebrities like Demi Lovato.

“It’s a cultural phenomenon,” Hanley told The Wall Street Journal. “Art just kind of like, moves on and gets absorbed by the culture.”

Joshua Tree National Park is about 45 miles east of Palm Springs.
