California swimmer missing after family rescued from heavy Hawaii surf, officials say

A California man who vanished off the coast of Hawaii on Christmas remains missing, officials say.

Prakash Shroff was swimming at Anini Beach on Sunday, Dec. 25 when he and his family became distressed in the water, according to a County of Kaua’i news release.

Bystanders helped bring two family members to shore but Shroff, 56, disappeared in the waves, according to the release.

The U.S. Coast Guard, local firefighters, police and detectives searched for Shroff into the night of Dec. 25 and resumed the search on the morning of Dec. 26 but there was no sign of Shroff, officials said.

“Rescuers report low visibility and dangerous conditions as there is a strong current and large surf in surrounding waters,” officials said in the release.

No update has been provided as of Dec. 27. Where in California Shroff is from was also not provided by officials.
