Tom Petty’s seaside California house inspired some of his music. Now it’s for sale
A home that has a place in rock ‘n’ roll history has just landed on the real estate market in California. The elegant seaside estate of the late Tom Petty, who was responsible for such memorable hits as “American Girl” and “Free Fallin’,” has listed in Malibu for $9.85 million.
The three-bedroom, three-bathroom beach house was purchased by the legend in 2010, The Wall Street Journal reported.
“When Tom first walked into the home, he just loved the essence and the spirit,” Compass listing agent Chris Cortazzo said in a news release. Cortazzo also worked with Petty when he first bought the home, the WSJ noted.
“He loved it’s originality — it was unpretentious which was very much his spirit. Every holiday was celebrated there. What a luxury for a massive celebrity to walk on the beach and not be bothered,” Cortazzo said. Its location right off PCH, its dry, sandy beach in front and 66 feet of frontage, it’s all a huge luxury that the market just doesn’t have.”
The residence, with its breathtaking ocean views, served as inspiration for some of Petty’s latter works, his widow, Dana Petty said.
“Tommy always had his recorder and guitar, as he was always writing and creating I remember him writing so many songs there,” Dana said in a news release. “Three that come to mind are ‘Good Things Coming’ and Mudcrutch song’s ‘Beautiful Blue’ and ‘Topanga Cowgirl.’”
The residence comes with a wide array of high-end features including:
Guest house
Tall ceilings
Wood plank floors
Fireplace
Formal dining room
Oceanfront deck
Rose garden patio
“Tommy loved that the beach house was pretty much all original, built in 1950, with a cabin feel. We spent a lot of time there with friends and family,” Dana said.
Tom Petty, who died in 2017 at the age of 66, was known for being the face of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the 1970s before going solo in the late ‘80s. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
