A cleanup crew found a backpack along an Oregon interstate, then discovered a human skull inside, police said.

On Monday, Nov. 21, an Oregon Department of Corrections cleanup crew found a “suspicious object” along Interstate 5, the Oregon State Police said.

“Troopers with the Salem Area Command took possession of a small backpack that contained a human skull,” police said in a news release. “The skull was transported to the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office.”

Officials are investigating the skull, and the medical examiner will help identify the remains.

“The skull had no identifiable features, but was most likely that of a female in her late 30s to 40s,” police said.

The skull was found in Marion County, about 70 miles south of Portland.
