‘Copy this.’ Popeyes trolls competitors with launch of new chicken sandwich
Popeyes has introduced an all-new chicken sandwich — and a challenge to its competitors.
The breading-free Blackened Chicken Sandwich rolled out at participating Popeyes restaurants nationwide on Wednesday Nov. 16, according to the fast food chain.
The limited-time offering is an updated take on the restaurant’s Classic Chicken Sandwich and features a marinated whole chicken breast seasoned with Cajun and Creole Spices, a product description reads.
The new sandwich also comes with “house classic or spicy mayo and crunchy barrel-cured pickles” served atop a toasted brioche bun. Pricing starts at $4.99 plus tax, according to a news release.
Popeyes’ classic chicken sandwich was the catalyst for the viral “chicken sandwich wars” of 2019 and sparked copycat offerings from competitors including Bojangles and KFC. In August, Wingstop unveiled its first-ever chicken sandwich with 12 flavors for customers to choose from.
The chicken sandwich debate led to many polls and rankings, including this one for fast-food chicken sandwiches from thrillst.com, which had Popeyes at No. 2, behind Burger King.
Popeyes is challenging its rivals to try and replicate its sandwich this time around, even sharing the “secret” ingredients.
“After the immense success of the Chicken Sandwich, we wanted to reinvent the category of traditional grilled chicken sandwiches with our all-new take on a non-breaded option,” Sami Sami Siddiqui, president of Popeyes North America, said in a statement. “We’re excited for guests to try this delicious new offering.”
