Brothers who kept breakfast tradition for years are killed on their way, CA cops say
Jose and Alfredo Linares were brothers who ate breakfast at the same donut shop for 20 years, a weekly tradition in the California neighborhood where they worked.
Both in the mid-70s, they were walking to Miss Donuts in Beverlywood on Wednesday, Nov. 9 when they were hit and killed by a car while crossing the crosswalk, media outlets reported.
“They weren’t married, they had no kids, they lived together, and they took care of each other,” Sergio Linares, the victims’ nephew, told KABC. “They loved what they did, they didn’t want to retire yet, they should’ve been living their life.”
The two brothers lived in La Puente but did landscaping work in the Beverlywood neighborhood.
The Los Angeles Fire Department got reports of a car “fatally striking pedestrians” at 5:40 a.m. that morning, according to a news release. The men were pronounced dead at the scene, but another brother — the father of Sergio — did not sustain any injuries, KTLA reported.
Walking to Miss Donuts was a weekly tradition. The three brothers had their own landscaping business and would go to grab breakfast before starting to their workday, according to KTLA.
McClatchy News has reached out to Miss Donuts for comment.
The men had been customer’s at Miss Donuts for over two decades, according to KABC.
“Alfredo and Jose were kind at heart and we’re always willing to help anybody in any situation,” Sergio Linares said on the GoFundMe page. “ This is a very hard time for our family as a big part was taken from us.”
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, according to media outlets.
“There isn’t a crime at the moment. The driver was not driving under the influence. There’s nothing at this point that’s leading us to a criminal investigation,” Sgt. Hernandez of the Los Angeles Police Department told KTLA.
