A Powerball drawing that could have produced a record-breaking win was instead delayed.
The results of the drawing that had been scheduled for Monday, Nov. 7, are pending, the game’s website said the next morning. The delay came as the estimated jackpot stood at $1.9 billion.
The Multi-State Lottery Association told CNN one of the lotteries participating in the drawing needed extra time to process sales. The group didn’t immediately share additional details with McClatchy News on Nov. 8.
“Like the rest of America, Powerball is eager to hold its drawing for the world record jackpot, however, protecting the integrity of the draw is of upmost importance, even if that means a further delay,” the association told the Associated Press in a statement, adding that policies wouldn’t allow the group to name which of the 48 lotteries was causing the delay.
So when could we know whether someone hit the jackpot?
The California Lottery said the issue was in another state but announced the results could be made known the morning of Nov. 8.
“When the required security protocols are complete, the drawing will be performed under the supervision of lottery security officials and independent auditors,” officials wrote overnight on Twitter.
The jackpot rose after no one matched enough numbers to win it on Saturday, Nov. 5. The odds of scoring the top prize stand at 1 in 292.2 million, McClatchy News reported.
