Hiker in critical condition after plunging 150 feet from Hawaii trail, officials say

A hiker remains in critical condition after falling at least 150 feet from a trail in Hawaii, according to media reports.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a call around 4:40 p.m. on Nov. 6 after a man fell while hiking with a group between the second and third peaks on the Olomana Trail, according to Hawaii News Now.

At around 5:30 pm., the fire department “sent four units staffed with 12 personnel” to assist in rescuing the fallen hiker, according to Star Advertiser.

First responders were able to locate the hiker by using a cellphone number for the hiking party, according to KHON 2.

“It’s a very dangerous trail to hike on and again it’s unfortunate that this hiker actually fell and slipped about 150 feet,” Honolulu Fire Department Battalion Chief Carlton Yamada told Hawaii News Now.

After locating the hiker, fire personnel airlifted him to a safe landing area, according to KHON 2. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services treated the hiker for his injuries.

As of now, fire officials do not know what caused the hiker to fall, according to Hawaii News Now.
