A 2-year-old was killed when a driver lost control and veered off a South Carolina road, officials said.

The child was riding in an SUV when it started to leave the right side of a road on Wednesday, Oct. 26, according to the Pickens County Coroner’s Office and S.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver over-corrected, went across the center line and careened off the left side of the road. The SUV then “traveled back off the right side of the roadway, striking a tree, then a fence, then a sign,” Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said in a news release.

The child — the only passenger in the SUV — died at the scene from blunt-force trauma. The coroner’s office identified the toddler as Ethan Shane Rampey.

The driver was injured and rushed to a hospital, according to state troopers.

Officials in their news release didn’t say whether anyone has been charged in the crash, which was reported just before 8 a.m. on Finley Road near Anderson Highway. The crash site is near the town of Easley and roughly 15 miles southwest of Greenville.

An investigation into the deadly wreck continues, officials said.
