Two kayakers were spotted struggling in an Oregon river after overturning — and bystanders rushed to help, police said.

The man and woman had been kayaking down the Deschutes River on Tuesday, Oct. 25, when they suddenly overturned and “struggled to get out of the river,” Oregon State Police said.

“The male kayaker was able to pull the female kayaker to the shore but not before she had gone under water and became unconscious,” police said in an incident report.

Bystanders at Cline Falls State Park saw the kayakers and called 911. They rushed to help the man and woman and began performing CPR, police said.

Police arrived at the scene and took over CPR until medics arrived. They took the woman to a local hospital.

The woman was in critical condition as of Wednesday, Oct. 26, according to Oregon State Police.

The park is about 20 miles north of Bend.
