Three men are dead and two more in serious condition after a shooting at a car drifting event, according to Illinois authorities.

About 100 cars took over an intersection in southwest Chicago around 4 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, the Chicago Police Department said in a news conference streamed live on Facebook. The car caravan began drifting in the middle of the street as police said they monitored the scene via live video feeds.

At least 13 rounds of gunshots rang out and people hit the ground, Chicago police said. Officers found five shot.

Three died after arriving at a hospital, Chicago police said. Their identities have not been released. Police said all three were between 15 and 20 years old and had gang affiliations.

The other two victims are in serious condition but expected to recover, Chicago police said.

Police estimated five people were involved in the shooting, three of whom are now dead. No suspects have been arrested or charges filed.

These types of “street takeover” events take place across Chicago and can be “organized in minutes,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported in August. People gather to watch cars perform stunts and race through the street.

Chicago passed an ordinance over the summer to discourage illegal drag racing and drifting events by towing vehicles and imposing fines, ABC 7 reported.
