3-year-old hit and killed after getting out of SUV that broke down, Florida troopers say
A 3-year-old was struck and killed after getting out of an SUV that had broken down on the side of a roadway, according to Florida state troopers and media reports.
The vehicle became disabled and was stopped in the right emergency lane of Butler Boulevard in Jacksonville on the evening of Oct. 19, Florida Highway Patrol tweeted. The child got out of the vehicle and walked into traffic.
WJXT reported that the child was a 3-year-old girl.
The child was struck by a passing vehicle and later pronounced dead at a local hospital, highway patrol said.
The crash happened at around 7:30 p.m., the Florida Times-Union reported, citing Florida troopers. The driver and passenger in the car that struck the child stopped and tried to help her, according to the newspaper.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers did not immediately respond to a request for a crash report from McClatchy News.
Traffic lanes were blocked at the time of the crash and vehicles were detoured around the area, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
