A “one-of-a-kind” 9-year-old and his grandfather died after a car veered off a South Carolina interstate, officials said.

The car went up an embankment and hit a patch of trees in the fatal crash along I-85 on Tuesday, Sept. 20, the S.C. Highway Patrol told WHNS.

The single-car wreck was reported at about 7:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes. It happened near milepost 72 in Spartanburg County, according to WYFF.

The driver died at the scene. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified him as 60-year-old Kenneth Lee Henderson of Spartanburg.

Henderson’s 9-year-old grandson was rushed to a hospital and later died. He was identified in a news release as Brently Dale Treadwell of Inman.

Brently is remembered as a “one-of-a-kind” fourth grader who made his mark on Sugar Ridge Elementary School.

“He had a bright smile that would light up any room and would sometimes sing a tune at lunch,” school principal Mandy Ehlich wrote in a statement. “He always made sure to include all of his classmates. He wanted everyone he came in contact with to feel loved and included. He will truly be missed.”

Spartanburg County School District Two told McClatchy News that support was made available for students on Sept. 21.

State troopers were investigating the crash, WSPA reported.

S.C. Highway Patrol didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Sept. 21.
