Crowd flees as man guns down two teens at carnival, California police say

Someone shot two teenagers to death at a Los Angeles-area street carnival, sending residents fleeing, California police reported.

“They were basically just, like, walking around, and everybody just started coming and running,” onlooker Marilyn Itzep told KNBC. “We heard a few gunshots, and I mean, it first started off like they were over there fighting by the gas station.”

A man confronted two teenage boys, believed to be between 15 and 17 years old, at 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, the Los Angeles Police Department told McClatchy News.

The teens were attending a street carnival in the 2700 block of North Broadway in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood, police said.

The man shot both teenagers, killing them, before running away, police said.

Investigators are still trying to determine exactly what happened, although there are reports some kind of dispute erupted.

The teens were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. No arrests have been made.

An Instagram post says the Los Angeles Boys and Girls Club had planned a community street fair and carnival in the area over the weekend.

Friends and family members of the two teens were seen leaving candles at the scene of the shooting Monday, Sept. 12, KNBC reported.

“You’ve got hundreds of people in a very concentrated area and shots are being fired, so obviously, it’s concerning to everybody,” Lt. Ryan Rabbett told KTTV.
