Hiker discovers human remains along West Virginia trail. Now sheriff is investigating
Human remains were discovered along a hiking trail, West Virginia officials say.
A hiker spotted the remains along Mont Chateau Trail in Coopers Rock State Forest on Saturday, Sept. 3, according to a Tuesday, Sept. 6, news release from the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say they responded to the area and confirmed the presence of remains before the body was recovered.
The remains were then taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston, the release says.
The sheriff will not share more details until an identification is confirmed.
Coopers Rock State Forest is north West Virginia, near the Pennsylvania border and about 160 miles northeast of Charleston.
