A 22-year-old hiker fell dozens of feet to his death during a Labor Day hike in Utah, police told news outlets.

The hiker was with a friend Monday, Sept. 5, in Neffs Canyon when he fell 30 feet, Unified Police told Fox 13. He injured his head during the fall, police told KSL.

Officials rushed to the area at about 11 a.m., but the hiker was pronounced dead before they could take him to a hospital, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Police are investigating, but they said it appears to be an accident, according to KSL. Officials did not disclose the hiker’s name.

Neffs Canyon is a challenging 7-mile out-and-back trail near Mounthaven, about 25 miles northeast of Salt Lake City, according to hiking website AllTrails. The hike typically takes about 6 hours to complete and gains more than 3,550 feet in elevation.
