Woman drowns after she’s swept away from family in rushing Washington river, cops say
A woman swimming with family drowned after being swept up by a Washington river, authorities said.
Deputies received a call about the woman being overtaken by the Yakima River at about 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, Yakima County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Casey Schilperoort said in an email to McClatchy News.
A man tried to rescue the woman but was also swept away and injured, Schilperoort said. Deputies rescued the man.
The woman, Jazmin Hernandez-Arriaga, 31, was found under debris about a mile and a half away around 5:45 p.m., according to Schilperoort.
The woman was not wearing a life jacket, Schilperoort said.
The Yakima River, which is about 200 miles southeast of Seattle, “is swift and has both shallow and deep areas,” according to Schilperoort.
