A missing man crashed his vehicle 250 feet down a California cliff, fire officials said.

Someone passing by discovered the man hundreds of feet down an embankment around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, near the La Honda area, Cal Fire officials and KGO-TV reported.

The driver from the San Francisco Bay Area was reported missing around 9 p.m. on Monday, SFGATE reported.

Rescuers do not know exactly when he drove down the cliff, the outlet reported.

A man in his 70s saw the crashed vehicle the next day, tied a rope to his truck and climbed down the hill to try and help the driver, KGO-TV reported.

The driver was able to get himself out of his vehicle, rescuers said.

A fire crew was then able to rescue the driver by using a rope system and a basket to bring him up from the embankment, officials said.
